Room Parent Coordination

Room representatives are parents and guardians from a particular class or grade level who serve as a liaison or contact person for the classroom. The Room Representatives play a very important role in each PTO unit. They provide a close personal contact between the PTO, parents, students and teachers. The room representative coordinator or Committee Chairperson represents the room representatives on the board of directors.

When serving as Room Parent, please be approachable for fellow classroom parents to ask you questions about activities going on in classroom and at school. Promote the work and events of the PTO and make every effort to attend PTO meetings to share information with your class parents. PTO truly values and appreciates everyone who steps up to be a Room Parent.

There is a meeting held at the beginning of the school year where the Room Parent Coordinator is asked to attend and present to the attendees. Home Room Parents are acquired on a volunteer basis usually through the Open House process by way of a sign up sheet set out by the teacher. It is beneficial to maintain a spreadsheet that lists the teacher names, teacher emails and the Room Parent contact information (name, email, phone number, etc). This can be referenced all year during grade level parties and School-wide events such as Spring Fling.

The Coordinator will present each Teacher’s Room Parent with a set of guidelines and support both by email and in person. These guidelines and best practices may include information about how money is collected for classroom needs, party planning, teacher’s wish lists or favorites, class birthday celebrations, class t-shirt orders, and coordination for event collections (such as the items for Spring Fling baskets).
